Luxury midsize SUVs have the expansive space you need as well as the modern tech and safety features and high-end amenities you want. In this category, one of the standouts is the Porsche Cayenne, fully redesigned for the 2019 model year and ranked at the top of its class by U.S. News and World Report thanks to its athletic, fun-to-drive spirit and sumptuous cabin. Here's how the 2019 Cayenne compares to another luxury favorite, the Volvo XC90.

Technology

Every trim of the Porsche Cayenne is equipped with the latest and greatest technology, including an expansive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity, Bluetooth, five USB ports, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and navigation. The XC90 includes a smaller 9-inch touchscreen and just two USB ports. It does not come with a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Performance

Both SUVs offer three engine options; the Cayenne also comes in a hybrid model. This Porsche can be equipped with either a 335-horsepower, turbocharged V6 engine, a 434-horsepower twin-turbo V6, or a 541-horsepower twin-turbo V8 with an incredible zero-to-60 time of just 5.9 seconds. Each comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although the XC90 is not rated for towing, the Cayenne can handle up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.

With the XC90, drivers can opt for either a 250-hp turbo-four, a supercharged version of that engine that gets 316 horses, and a 400-hp hybrid. All three are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard for the Cayenne and optional for the XC90.

Reliability

The Cayenne has earned an average reliability score for the class of three out of five stars from J.D. Power and Associates. The XC90 has a below-average rating from the agency, 2.5 stars. Both new SUVs come with a four-year/50,000-mile new car limited warranty.
