The Porsche brand is synonymous with sports car excellence. Yet its best-selling model is now an SUV - the extremely popular and well-built Cayenne. Now the German automaker is extending its reach outside the traditional sports car realm with the Macan, a small crossover model. Auto critic Tom Voelk recently reviewed the Macan for The New York Times.

Voelk likes the Macan's get-up-and-go attitude and describes it as "chuckable fun with the feel of a rear-drive car." The S model tested goes from 0 to 60 miles an hour in five seconds flat. Voelk says the brakes are stout, and tire grip is sticky and predictable. Shifts from the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox are quicker than the blink of an eye.
